Cool Slow-Mo

I'm trying a blog plugin which is supposed to allow me to easily search for and insert all sorts of media, including YouTube videos.  As a Level II archery instructor, I though I'd try this video.

All arrows have "spine", or stiffness.  If your arrow is too stiff ("high spine") for the weight of pull on the bow (measured in pounds), it will shoot unpredictably.  If your arrow is too soft ("low spine"), it may even break.

The flexing of the arrow is due in part to the inertia of the front part of the arrow.  The back of the arrow begins to move forward before the front part moves, resulting in flex (you can see this if you pause the video just after :04 seconds).  Compound bows, interestingly enough, don't produce this arrow "porpoising" because they are typically shot with a trigger release, which releases the string almost perfectly in line with the direction of pull.  When using your fingers to release the bowstring, as with a recurve bow, the string rolls off the ends of the fingers, introducing a lateral movement of the bow string, thus adding to the the flex motion.  Compound bows, therefore, can use arrows with very high spine, and are particularly well suited for hunting.

Fascinating, isn't it.

Plugin seems to work very well.
